One of Wisconsin’s great golf escapes resides at the always popular Lake Geneva. My focus was on the 2 major public destinations in the area, Geneva National and Grand Geneva. Grand Geneva has two golf courses and Geneva National has 54 holes of golf to enjoy. We also have an early contender for the Internship Hidden Gem award. Let’s dig in.
Grand Geneva - Brute
The Brute isn’t quite as brutal as the name would suggest. I even made a formal recommendation to change the name to Beaut. As in “She’s a beaut, Clark.” Not sure if anyone is going to read my comment card, but the request has been made.
Designed by Robert Bruce Harris, the Brute is perfectly manicured and immaculately maintained, but if you get lost in her beauty, some of the crowned greens can easily sneak up on you and deal you a quick bogey blow.
Grand Geneva - Highlands
Originally designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, the course was transformed in 1996 by Bob Cupp. Remnants of Dye and Nicklaus still dominate the golf course and challenge exists on just about every hole. The noteworthy 9th hole is an absolute beast of a par 4. Anyone who makes birdie here, should be given a gold star. Our group was a combined 8 over on the 9th.
Geneva National - Player
Just about everyone that I ran into at Geneva National stated that the Player course was their favorite of the trio at Geneva National. With a quick glance a the pictures, it’s easy to see why.
Geneva National - Palmer
It’s almost impossible to play golf in the Geneva area and not hear about Mr Glen Murray. Coming from Sand Valley, Glen runs the show over at Geneva National and joined the internship madness. We played a 2 man best ball match and as predicted, Glen wiped us out with his top tier play. Andrew Tucker documented the action for the Lake Geneva regional news. Catch the recap here.
Geneva National - Trevino
Rounding out the trio of golf courses at Geneva National is the Trevino course. The first three holes are probably my favorite and the action starts off hot with a scenic opening tee shot.
Eagle Springs Golf Resort
Just a 30 minute drive outside of Lake Geneva is the spectacular Eagle Springs Golf Resort. Evan though there are only 9 holes of golf, she’s an early candidate for the prestigious hidden gem award and sports one of the most unique golf holes in the entire country. The 2nd hole is a glorious golf volcano!
In addition to the spectacular 2nd hole, Eagle Springs delivers a handful of other home runs. The opening hole has curves for days, and the 6th hole is another well shaped short par 4.
Any respectable golf journey to the Lake Geneva area should include Eagle Springs as a destination.
Bigfoot Country Club
While it is technically not in Bigfoot country, I could not pass up the opportunity to continue the search for Bigfoot at Bigfoot CC. While Bigfoot would have to be pretty foolish to hangout at a place called Bigfoot CC, I figured the ancient beast might make an appearance as some sort of play in reverse psychology mind games. Unfortunately, Bigfoot did not show up and we settled for a handful of birdies.
Hawks View Golf Club
At a golf course named Hawks View, it would be inappropriate to post any photographs that were not akin to the view from a hawk. Ideally, these photos would have been taken by me as I rode a hawk over the golf course, but I used my drone… my Robert Trent Drones.
