The spirit of the WSGA internship isn’t simply about touring the best private clubs in the state and playing a bunch of exclusive courses. It’s about exploring the real landscape of Wisconsin golf. That exploration starts here in Milwaukee with the courses that real golfers play. It’s Milwaukee MUNI golf time.
1. Brown Deer Park
Leading the muni charge in Milwaukee is Brown Deer Park. The course famously hosted the Greater Milwaukee Open for decades and was the official launching pad for Tiger Woods’ professional golf career.
2. Grant Park Golf Course
In 1920, Grant Park opened as Milwaukee County’s first 18-hole golf course. Even to this day, the course still uses the historic 1892 farmhouse for its clubhouse.
At 5,213 yards, is relatively short by today’s standards, but don’t let that nonsense fool you, the course features a number of challenging golf holes that will require some well placed golf shots if you are looking to score.
Played my old stomping grounds, Grant Park, this morning with WSGA intern @PatrickjKoenig. He’s playing 50 Wisco courses in 50 days. He shot 70 w 5 birdies today. Follow him on Instagram @pjkoenig pic.twitter.com/3VrrneF31a

My round at Grant Park was played with decorated golf and sports writer, Gary D’Amoto. Gary is a member of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame and he learned to play the game at Grant Park. The golf course was a joy to play but the real treat was listening to Gary reminisce about his memories as a child.
3. Whitnall Park Golf Course
Founded in 1932, Whitnall Park Golf Course was designed by George Hansen. The course features tree lined fairways and really takes it up a notch on the back nine. At just $39 during peak times, this Whitnall is a real value.
4. Oakwood Park Golf Course
At over 7000 yards, Oakwood is the longest of the Milwaukee Muni lineup. The conditions were smooth and my game was on during my round at Oakwood. As I came down the stretch I had visions of 69 in my sights. Unfortunately, I would bogey the final hole and post a round of 71. That’s a good mark for me and an early contender for the low internship score award.
5. Warnimont Park Golf Course
Does your short game belong in the dumpster? Does your wedge game resemble an unfolded lawn chair? Relax, the cure is here. With 18 par 3’s ranging from 100-190 yards, Warnimont Park is the perfect place to hone your short game or get in a quick 18.
